Thank you all for a great beginning to the year! We are still working through routines and procedures, but the school year is off to a wonderful start!
As we continue to move into the school year, I want to remind families that our doors open for students at 7:30. Car riders should be dropped off in our back parking lot, which can be accessed via Lovers Lane and Northgate Avenue. We ask that parents stay in the car when dropping students off or picking students up. If you need to help your child buckle their seat belt or car seat in the afternoon, please continue through the loop after your child is loaded and stop on the side of the parking lot. This allows us to keep the car line moving.
Students are tardy if they arrive after 7:50. Students arriving after 7:50 need to be brought into our office and checked in by a parent or guardian.
Additionally, for the safety of our staff and students, we try to limit traffic in our front parking lot during arrival and dismissal. This lot should only be used to drop off students in our exceptional learner’s classes and students with limited mobility. We greatly appreciate your cooperation with this.
Other News and Notes:
Attendance:
If your child is absent, please contact our office either via email, phone or through our Rooms messaging system to let us know that they will be absent by 8:30.
PTO
Our next PTO meeting will be September 9th at 5:30.
If you have questions about our PTO, please reach out to our PTO President Lori Randolph (westwoodpto@waynesboro.k12.va.us)
Spirit wear order forms are available on Rooms and have been sent home with students. Orders are due by August 28th.
School Nutrition:
We ask that parents and guests not bring fast food when they come to eat lunch with their child. If you are coming to eat with your child and would like to purchase a school lunch, please make sure you have funds on your child’s account, a check, or cash to purchase the meal.
We ask that parents refrain from sending food items in for the class when celebrating your child’s birthday. Food in the classroom causes concerns with allergies and must meet our wellness policy guidelines. I have also attached a reference document to this email.
For more information about school nutrition, please visit our school nutrition webpage.
Safety Drills
As we go through the school year, we will be conducting various safety drills including lockdown drills, fire drills, tornado drills, and earthquake drills. These drills are required and used to teach students how we would respond in the event of an emergency.
At some point during the month of August, we will conduct 2 fire drills and a lockdown drill.
Are you interested in Volunteering or Chaperoning?
We’re excited to introduce a new, streamlined process for managing school volunteers across Waynesboro Public Schools. Our updated Volunteer Website is now live and can be found at:
va.us/o/wps/page/volunteering-
This site serves as the central hub for anyone interested in volunteering in our schools. Volunteers will now complete an online application through our website, and a third-party vendor, Sterling Volunteers, will conduct the required background checks. This process will take the place of Volunteer/Chaperone applications used previously.
If you would like to be considered as a classroom volunteer, a field trip chaperone, or to help with school events, we encourage you to go ahead and complete the registration form, as it takes approximately 2 weeks to complete the process.
This process must be completed each year before you can volunteer or chaperone.
Westwood Contacts and General Information
Office contacts and general school information can be found at the following link: https://app.smore.com/n/947kq
Finally, this year we will primarily be communicating through the Waynesboro Public School app. Rooms is the parent-teacher chat feature that allows parents to connect directly with the child’s teachers and our office staff.
If you have not done so already, I encourage you to download the WPS app for your phone.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office at 540-946-4670.
