Fall leaves header that reads Westwood Hills Elementary School November News

Good afternoon, Westwood Families!

Fall is in the air, and we are solidly in our second quarter.  As we enter the month of November, I wanted to let you know about some upcoming events and share a few reminders.

Upcoming Events:

Monday, November 2nd and Tuesday, November 3rd are teacher workdays.  There is no school for students on these days.

Friday, November 6th is our K-2 Movie Night!  More information will be coming home about this event.

Wednesday, November 11th, we will be having a PTO meeting at 5:30 PM.

Tuesday, November 17th is our PTO sponsored Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night!  More information about this event will be coming home with your child.

Wednesday, November 18th is our 1st grade concert.

There will be no school for students Monday, November 23rd - Friday, November 27th.  Students will return to school on Monday, November 30th.

We encourage all of our families to download the Waynesboro Public Schools app to help keep up with school and division events.  The app is a great way to communicate with your child’s teachers and our office staff.

Reminder:

For the safety of our students,

  • Car riders should be dropped off in our back parking lot.  When dropping off students or picking up students, please do not pass other cars and be sure to follow directions of our staff.

  • We also ask that parents do not drop students off in our front parking lot during our arrival times.  That lot is reserved from 7:30 - 7:50 and from 2:30 - 3:00.

  • If your child arrives after 7:50 in the morning, you must walk them into the office to sign them in.

Lost and Found:

Our lost and found is growing.  If your child is missing anything, please have your child check the lost and found for it or swing by our office so you can look for it.

Chaperones:

As we are planning field trips, I want to remind parents that you must complete the online volunteer application if you intend to chaperone.  This application can be found at the following link:  https://www.waynesboro.k12.va.us/o/wps/page/volunteering-at-wps

This process takes up to two weeks to complete.

Additionally, for the safety of our students, parents and other family members cannot show up at a field trip and join the group without being approved to chaperone.

If you have any questions, please contact our office.

Safety Drills:

As we go through the school year, we will be conducting various safety drills, including lockdown drills, fire drills, tornado drills, and earthquake drills.  These drills are required and used to teach students how we would respond in the event of an emergency.

At some point during the month of November, we will conduct a fire drill.

Title I School Notification Regarding State Testing:

On December 10, 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA) was signed into law. Section 1112(e)(2) of ESSA states that parents of students in Title I schools have a right to know about state or division policies regarding student participation in any assessments mandated by ESSA, including any policy, procedure, or parental right to opt students out of such assessments. If you would like to receive information about this topic, please contact Dr. India Harris, Director of Secondary Instruction and Testing, either by phone at (540)946-4600 Ext. 8145, or in writing at iharris@waynesboro.k12.va.us.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office at 540-946-4670.

Thank you and have a great weekend!
