Crunch

WAYNESBORO  –  Waynesboro Public Schools (WPS) is proud to celebrate Virginia Farm to School Week, taking place October 6-10, 2025.  The division will join schools and communities across the Commonwealth in highlighting the importance of connecting students to locally grown food, school gardens, and nutrition and agriculture education.

The highlight of the week will be participation in the Crunch Heard ‘Round the Commonwealth, when students and staff bite into local Virginia apples at the same time to “make some noise” for farm to school programs.

Event Details:

  • Waynesboro High School: On Tuesday, October 7, from 11:20 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.., all students will gather on the football field to crunch into local apples together.  This large scale celebration promises to be a great photo and video opportunity.

  • Elementary Schools and Preschool: On Thursday, October 9, each school will combine their Crunch celebration with local farmer visits, giving students the chance to learn more about agriculture firsthand:

Virginia Farm to School programs continue to grow across the state.  According to the Virginia Department of Education, Office of School and Community Nutrition Programs, child nutrition programs in Virginia purchased $20.89 million worth of local food during the 2023-24 school year.

"Our Farm to School program is about more than just fresh, local food - it's about connecting our students to where their meals come from, supporting our local farmers, and fostering lifelong healthy eating habits,” said Kelly Shomo, school nutrition supervisor. “This week's events celebrate the powerful role food plays in building stronger communities and healthier futures for our kids."
